»Working the phones to save the Supreme Court

In 2005 the Atlanta, Georgia GCI team ran a telephone outreach campaign to stop George W. Bush from stacking our Supreme Court with ultra-conservative judges. This campaign was a joint project of Grassroots Campaigns and People for the American Way.

During his second term, President Bush may have the ability to nominate as many as three Supreme Court Justices for lifetime appointments to a narrowly divided Court. This power represents a serious threat to our civil liberties; many of Bush’s lower court nominees have shown an extreme dedication to right-wing ideology, and have appalling records on civil rights, religious liberty, environmental protection and reproductive choice.

People for the American Way has taken a lead role in exposing these nominees’ records and gearing up for the likely battle over the Supreme Court. Raising money and building membership is a critical for a quick response once a nomination is made, so our skilled staff members organized a phone bank to make it happen.

If the need arises to fill a vacancy on the bench and the President responds by nominating someone who’s out of touch with America’s democratic values, we have a tough fight coming. But it’s a fight worth having, and GCI was proud to work with PFAW to mobilize public support.
