»From Hawaii to Manhattan

What could be more different than Hawaii and New York City? Not much, and that was exactly what Will White was looking for when he moved from his native state of Hawaii in search of a completely different experience.

Will moved to New York City to attend New York University from Honolulu, Hawaii. After college, he stuck around to work in a market research position in downtown Manhattan.

“One day I was out on my lunch break thinking about how much I hated my current job and I was stopped on the corner of 6th Avenue and 18th Street by a street canvasser. The canvasser asked me if I could contribute to the DNC’s campaign to beat George Bush, but I didn’t have any money. Instead, I had a question for him … ‘Are you hiring?’” The next day Will called into the office, set up an interview, came in and was hired as a part-time canvasser for the DNC campaign on the weekends up until November 2nd.

“After the election, I was pretty depressed and I had started back at my market research job. I was still unhappy there so I decided to come back to Grassroots Campaigns full-time."

Will was the top fundraiser in the office and was quickly promoted into an Assistant Director position in the New York City office.

“I really have no choice but to do this work. I come from a very political family and environment; it runs in my blood. My father founded the Hawaii Food Bank and my mother works in student services and organizes community events with the student ethnic groups at the University of Hawaii. I had to work for social change, and aside from my background, it is something I really care about. The thing I like best about the work we do is the camaraderie in our office and in our organization. We really are a close-knit team. Being out in the field as a part of this team really means a lot to me.”
